King Grendal knew what had happened to his sister as soon as the High Priestess greeted him with “Your Royal Highness”.
He stifled a sigh and listened.
“There can be no doubt that your sister is Queen Evadne. By the law of the Realms, she will take her office.”
“Back,” he added mildly. “That soon. I did not think reincarnation worked that way?”
The High Priestess’s half-shrug looked remarkably undignified. “Your mother’s spirit possesses her. It is still a former monarch’s soul in a new body.”
Grendal nodded solemnly, wondering which aspect of the matter was the most awkward.
